CALGARY - A new report estimates the huge potential and amounts of shale oil and natural gas in Alberta.
The numbers in the report released this week by the Energy Resources Conservation Board and Alberta Geological Survey are staggering.
The report estimates there are 423 billion barrels of shale oil, 3,300 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and 58 billion barrels of natural-gas liquids in the province.
The report notes that these estimates of oil and natural gas locked in shale rock formations are not all recoverable reserves.
It says geological and engineering constraints, the economy and environmental concerns will ultimately determine how much of the resource can be tapped.
The report says there has been a lack of interest in shale hydrocarbon reserves, but that is changing as countries such as the United States ramp up production.
